During the summer months we all have the tendency to switch off our central heating or switch our boilers to summer mode.
Is this ok ?
Well we don't need the central heating on while the temperatures are soaring and we do everything we can to make our homes cooler.
As the school holidays come to an end or the holiday season is closing, the dark nights start drawing in. Before we know it it's October and we head for the thermostat. We put the heating on and nothing, suddenly the chill gets colder as we think about what could be wrong.
All heating systems rely on mechanical moving parts whether it be motorised valve (actuator) or diverter valve within a combination boiler. These parts are designed to be used regularly and can withstand years of use. That said if something is left stood still for months and no demand is required they will become stiff or simply fail.
So what do I do ?
General maintenance is essential and can be done by simply keeping these parts moving and lubricated. Don't leave the heating off for months. Simply turning the heating on for 2 mins every couple of days will keep these parts moving freely and ready for when they are needed,Also saving an unnecessary expense.
Regular servicing of your heating system is also essential we will cover that in the next top tip.
